Demonstrations are being organised all over the Netherlands on Thursday night to remember the victims of Wednesday’s shooting at the offices of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris.

The mayors of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht have urged people to take to the streets at 18.00 hours, a call later taken up by the mayors of Gouda, Leiden, Assen and others. There are also Facebook pages urging similar demonstrations in Delft, The Hague and Hoorn, broadcaster Nos reports.

In Paris and other French cities demonstrations are also planned for 18.00. Tens of thousands of people took to the streets in French cities on Wednesday evening and there were spontaneous demonstrations in Amsterdam and other Dutch cities.

Amsterdam’s mayor Eberhard van der Laan is planning to walk from the French consulate to Dam square. Rotterdam’s mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb has called on people to gather at the city’s Plein 1940.

Pack your suitcase

Aboutaleb said in television current affairs show Nieuwsuur on Wednesday evening there is no place in the Netherlands for people who oppose ‘our freedom’.

To Dutch nationals who sympathise with the killers he said: ‘In heaven’s name, pack your suitcase and go. Perhaps there is somewhere in the world where you can be yourself. Do not kill innocent journalists. That is despicable. Disappear if you can’t find your place in the Netherlands.’

Aboutaleb, who has previously said youngsters who want to fight in Syria should be allowed to go and never return, described himself as a ‘furious Muslim’. ‘It is very important that Muslims distance themselves from this en masse,’ he said.
