Cycling advisory group calls for 25 kph speed limit on bike lanes

Government cycling experts are recommending the introduction of a 25 kph speed limit on Dutch bike lanes to curb the impact of electric ‘super’ bikes.

Electric bikes with speeds of up to 40 kph are now on sale in the Netherlands and there are concerns about their impact on cyclist safety.

‘The maximum speed limit should apply to all users of cycle lanes, including racing bikes,’ the cycling advisory group Fietsberaad says, while admitting enforcing it will not be easy.

However, cycling union Fiestersbond has its doubts about the proposal, and says a maximum speed limit should be set at 30 kph rather than 25 kph. The Fietsersbond also says electric super bikes should be banned from cycle lanes in built-up areas.

Because super bikes can go so fast, they should technically be officially registered as a vehicle, have third party insurance and blue number plates.
