The Netherlands to host 2017 women’s European football championships

The Netherlands is to host the 2017 women’s football European championships, Uefa has agreed.

The decision is not a surprise as the Netherlands was the only country to apply to host the event, news agency ANP says.

Sixteen countries will take part in the event. At the previous championships, held in Sweden in 2013, just 12 countries were involved.

Matches will be played in Breda, Deventer, Doetichem, Enschede, Rotterdam, Tilburg and Utrecht.  The final will take place in Enschede.

‘Organising this event underlines our ambitions in terms of women’s football,’ Bert van Oostveen of the KNVB football association said.

The Dutch women’s team have just qualified for the next women’s World Cup for the first time.
