Paper Bible and Koran replaced by e-reader in parliament
The Bible and Koran are set to disappear from the parliamentary debating chamber and will be replaced by a digital e-reader version, the Volkskrant says on Wednesday.
Other books which permanently occupy a place on the chairwoman’s table will also be removed to make way for a new, more modern control panel, MPs have decided.
MPs from the fundamentalist Christian SGP are angry about the changes. ‘We place immense value on the visibility of the Bible in parliament,’ said spokesman Menno de Bruyne. ‘The Bible has an important role in our history and deserves a prominent place.’
