Dutch Kurd killed in Iraq, clearing Islamic State explosives

A Dutch Kurd has been killed in Iraq while clearing explosives from houses abandoned by Islamic State militants, broadcaster Nos said on Tuesday.

It is thought to be the first time someone with Dutch nationality has been killed on the Kurdish side of the conflict.

Yusuf Koçer, who was 52, came to the Netherlands in 1988 and became an entrepreneur,  trading flowers and setting up a staffing agency. He returned to Kurdish Iraq in 2006, leaving his children in the Netherlands, Nos said.
