Dutch ‘jihadi’ couple, both 20, face jail of three and four years

A young couple from The Hague should be jailed for three years and four years for their role in supporting Islamic State militants, the public prosecution department said on Tuesday.

Maher H, who is 20, is accused of travelling to Syria and fighting with IS militants. His wife Shukri F is accused of trying to recruit other fighters to join him.

H has admitted being in Syria but says he was there to do humanitarian work and distribute food packages.

However, the public prosecution department showed the court photographs of H in camouflage clothing, brandishing a kalashnikov rifle. He should be jailed for three years for planning to carry out murder or manslaughter with a terrorist motive, the public prosecutor said.

Twenty-year-old F, also known as Oum Usama, is said to have recruited at least six people to take part in the fighting, of whom three actually went to Syria. They include F and a 17-year-old youth she had also married in an Islamic ceremony, local broadcaster Omroep West reported.

She should be jailed for four years, the public prosecutor said.

The court will publish its verdict on December 1.
