Five hospitalised after drunk driver, 73, ploughs into pedestrians

Five people have been taken to hospital in Leeuwarden after a drunken pensioner drove into them, news agency ANP said on Monday afternoon.

The accident happened shortly after lunchtime on the Beursplein in the Frisian capital.

The 73-year-old man, who comes from Harlingen, reportedly drove the wrong way onto a bridge in the city centre and ended up on the pavement, where he hit five pedestrians.

Four of them and the driver have been taken to hospital. The driver has been arrested for drunk driving, ANP said.
