There were mixed fortunes for the two Dutch football clubs taking part in this season’s Europa League competition.
Luuk de Jong’s penalty gave PSV Eindhoven a 1-0 win over Estorial of Portugal in their Group E match. Captain Georginio Wijnaldum was relieved the club opened with a home victory despite ‘not reaching the level we expect of ourselves’, he said after the game.
Rotterdam club Feyenoord lost their first match of this season’s Europa League against defending champions Sevilla by 2-0. The Spanish club ‘sank an outclassed Feyenoord’ with two first-half goals in their Group G match.
Last year’s Dutch league winners Ajax kicked off their campaign in the Champions League earlier this week with a 2-2 home draw against Paris Saint-Germain.
