Confusion over Diemen gas explosion death toll, may remain at two

The two people described as missing after Thursday’s gas explosion in a block of flats in Diemen are likely to be the same two as reported dead, broadcaster Nos says on Friday.

Police say they have no indications that the two bodies found in the flats are any different from the two people listed as missing. However, the bodies have not yet been identified and one apartment still needs to be searched, the broadcaster says.

Experts are currently making the building safe so rescue workers can enter it. One of the dead is thought to be an official for Amsterdam housing corporation De Key.

A further 15 people were injured in the blast, thought to have been caused by a gas leak following renovation work.

All 200 people who live in the building were evacuated and had to spend the night elsewhere. Those living on the ground floor may be allowed to return later today, RTL news says.
