Dutch athletes win gold and silver at European Championships

Dutch athlete Dafne Schippers took her second gold medal at the European Championships in Zurich when she won the 200 metres on Friday evening.

The 22-year-old Schippers beat the UK’s Jodie Williams in 22.03 seconds, breaking the world record in the process.

She won gold on Wednesday in the 100 metres, making her the first Dutch runner to win the double since Fanny Blankers-Koen in 1950

Schippers will be in action again at the weekend in the women’s 4×100 metres.

Gold and silver

There was a gold medal earlier on Friday evening for the Dutch Ethiopian Sifan Hassan in the 1,500 metres. She beat Abeba Aregawi from Sweden in 4.04.18 minutes after a strong sprint finish.

The heptathlon gave the Dutch team their third medal of the evening when Nadine Broersen took the silver.
