Sharp fall in bankruptcies

The number of bankruptcies fell 33% in May, the biggest monthly fall in two years, the bankruptcy register faillissementsdossier.nl reports.

In May, 829 companies went bankrupt compared with 1,231 in May 2013, the organisation says.

The drop in bankruptcies takes in most sectors, including hospitality where 27 hotels, restaurants and cafes went bankrupt, down by half on April.

Last week, the central statistics agency CBS said turnover in the hospitality sector rose 1.6%. Only cafes are not profiting from the upward trend, probably because of higher value-added tax and the increase in the age at which youngsters can buy alcohol. This went up from 16 to 18 in January.
