Food and drink in the Netherlands is 3% cheaper than the European average but going out to eat is 15% more expensive, according to new figures from European statistics agency Eurostat.

Denmark, which is not a member of the eurozone, is the most expensive European country in every category, the Eurostat figures show.

The research shows central and eastern European countries are still much cheaper than western European lands. Prices for goods and services in Romania and Poland are 43% below the European average while in Denmark they are 40% higher.

Food and drink are more expensive than the Netherlands in 15 other countries, including Greece, Slovenia and Cyprus.
