Number of youth gangs drops dramatically

The number of youth gangs in the Netherlands has halved, according to figures from the justice ministry.

There were 1,760 gangs in 2009 but that has fell to 764 by the end of 2013, a drop of 56%.

Since 2009 youth gangs have been divided into three categories: annoying, creating a nuisance and criminal.

The treatment of young criminals has also changed. They are not only prosecuted through the courts but are given care and support together with their families.
