Unions fear closure of Dutch Philip Morris cigarette factory

The 1,400 workers at the Philip Morris cigarette factory in Bergen op Zoom have been summoned to hear a ‘business update’ on Friday morning and unions fear the plant may be closed down.

Staff have also been told to bring their company passes to the meeting, the Financieele Dagblad reports. A spokesman for the company declined to comment on the rumours.

The Financieele Dagblad points out that Philip Morris Australia on Wednesday said it was switching production to South Korea.

The factory produces some 75 billion Marlboro, L&M and Chesterfield cigarettes a year. Most are destined for export.
