The Labour party (PvdA) is likely to be excluded from new city administrations in both Rotterdam and Amsterdam, according to media reports on Thursday.

In Rotterdam, local right-wing populist party Leefbaar Rotterdam is on the brink of reaching a coalition agreement with the D66 Liberals and the Christian Democrats.

Talks are progressing well and the negotiators hope to present a coalition agreement and name potential alderman by early May, broadcaster RTL news reports.

In Amsterdam, D66 – the big winner in the March 22 local election – has already reached agreement to form a coalition with the left-wing green party GroenLinks.

According to the Parool newspaper, the right-wing VVD Liberals are poised to become the third coalition partner to ensure a stable majority, rather than Labour. An announcement is due before the weekend, the paper says.

Amsterdam’s GroenLinks councillors have already agreed to accept D66’s housing market reforms in return for higher parking fees and other measures to make the city greener.

Labour, which lost much support in the local elections, had been the biggest party in Amsterdam since 1946.
