More official reports about child pornography are made in the Netherlands than in any other European country, the child porn hotline Meldpunt Kinderporno says on Friday.

Last year, the organisation dealt with 23,278 complaints, an increase of some 17% on 2012, according to its annual report.

The Netherlands has more reports of child porn than other countries because it hosts more websites which feature such material, the organisation says. Internet is deeply embedded in the Netherlands and there are a large number of server farms.

The aim of the hotline is to ensure child pornography is removed from the internet as fast as possible. Last year, it, police and internet service providers reached a deal to have illegal material removed within one day.

The organisation says better technology and more intensive detection work are needed to reduce the spread of child porn. However, a shortage of cash is hampering the organisation’s work and government and EU cutbacks will also have an impact. ‘We are looking for sponsors,’ the organisation says.
