Juvenile offender psychiatric prison fails most of them
Most of the teenagers who spend time in a young offenders psychiatric institution re-offend on their release, the Volkskrant says on Thursday.
Of the youngsters who were released from detention in 2000, 80% were again in trouble with the police within 10 years and around 50% within just two years, justice ministry figures show.
At the same time the cost of the treatment has gone up from some €300 a day in 2007 to €563 in 2012, the Volkskrant says.
The paper looked at juvenile detention after it emerged Antonio van der Ploeg, who was arrested in Germany yesterday after a cross border manhunt, spent years in a youth clinic.
