Amsterdam council official tipped as new junior finance minister
Amsterdam city council transport chief Eric Wiebes is being tipped to succeed junior finance minister Frans Weekers who resigned last week.
Both Nos television and the Telegraaf newspaper say Wiebes, from the right-wing Liberal VVD, will be named this week.
Wiebes, who is 50, has been involved in the city’s Noord-Zuid metro project and worked as a consultant to the economic affairs ministry before that. He has no national political experience.
Weekers resigned last week following a debate over problems the tax office is having in paying housing and healthcare benefits to tens of thousands of families.
