Zeeland village of 1,100 shares €43m lottery win (update)

The €42.9m prize in this year’s special New Year postcode lottery draw has gone to a Zeeland village with a population of just 1,100.

Everyone in Vrouwenpolder shares the same 4354 postcode numbers and that means every villager who takes part in the lottery will share the winnings.

Half of the prize money will go to people with the complete winning postcode – nine households on the Koningin Beatrixlaan. One householder is set to take €6m, with the others well over €1m, Nos television said. ‘It has not yet sunk in, but I am a millionaire,’ one winner said.

The remaining money will be shared between the rest of the village players. It is not yet known how many people this will involve but according to the AD, they may get around €20,000 for every ticket.

While the winners celebrated, those who do not take part in the lottery were stoical. ‘I am a little sad but I am very happy for my neighbours,’ one local told broadcaster Omroep Zeeland. ‘But it does hurt.’

The main prize in the €30m state lottery Staatsloterij has gone to a winning ticket in Friesland.
