One in five cinema visits last year was to a Dutch film
More people went to the cinema in the Netherlands last year and Dutch films were increasingly popular, according to new figures from the Dutch film distributors association.
In total, cinema visits were up 0.8% at almost 30.8 million, while the number of seats rose by 3,000 to 137.000. The share of Dutch films in the number of visits rose from 14% to over 20%.
More than 21 films were seen by more than 100,000 people. The most successful Dutch production was Verliefd op Ibiza (In Love on Ibiza) which was seen by 715,000 people.
Nature documentary De Nieuwe Wildernis (the new wilderness), about wildlife in the Oostvaardersplassen reserve near Almere, was a close second, attracting nearly 690,000 viewers.
Despicable Me 2 was the most watched film overall with over 910,000 tickets sold.
