Dutch horror film fails to make Oscar shortlist
Dutch horror film Borgman, directed by Alex van Warmerdam, has not made the shortlist for best foreign language film for the 2014 Oscar nominations.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has whittled down the entries to a shortlist of nine, which will be reduced to five by mid-January.
However, there is a Dutch connection to one of the shortlisted films. Palestinian director Hany Abu-Assad, nominated for his film Oma, lived in the Netherlands for 25 years.
He moved into film after studying aeronautical engineering at Delft University. Abu Assad also received an Oscar nomination for Paradise Now, about two suicide bombers.
