New hope for former child refugee facing deportation after 12 years
A 22-year-old Angolan man who has been in the Netherlands since he was 10 years old has been given a temporary reprieve from deportation.
Wime Dumingos is six months too old to qualify for the amnesty for well-rooted child refugees introduced last year and was scheduled to be sent back to Angola on Friday.
However, following a high-profile campaign by his supporters, junior justice minister Fred Teeven has agreed Dumingos can wait out his final appeal in the Netherlands. He has also been released from detention pending a final decision.
