Leaks mean no more confidential info on Syria, minister tells MPs
The lower house of parliament will not be briefed on any more security service information about the use of chemical weapons in Syria, foreign affairs minister Frans Timmermans said on Wednesday.
After the first briefing, several MPs leaked information into the public arena which broke confidentiality agreements, the minister said. This means there can be no more discussions on confidential matters.
Christian Democrat MP Pieter Omzingt told news agency ANP the minister is wrong to refuse a new briefing. ‘In other words, parliament has to believe the minister based on his blue eyes,’ Omzingt is quoted as saying.
MPs are due to debate the latest situation in Syria with the minister on Thursday.
Opposition MPs are now assessing how to approach the debate given the ‘shocking lack of information’, as ChristenUnie MP Joël Voordewind said.
MPs are also demanding the minister reveal who leaked the information.
