Tough draw for Ajax in Champions League
Amsterdam football club Ajax has drawn Barcelona, Milan and Celtic in the group stage of the Champion’s League.
Ajax coach Frank de Boer said he was fairly satisfied with the draw. ‘We drew three fantastic teams and we’ll do all we can to make it as difficult as possible for them,’ De Boer told the Uefa website.
‘Third place would be a good performance already, but obviously we always hope for more. We aim for second, but we’re about to lose some important players, that makes a difference.’
Earlier this week, it emerged Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen, described by De Boer as ‘very important’ to the Ajax squad, is to move to English side Tottenham Hotspur for €13.5m.
Europa League
AZ’s efforts to win a place in the group stage of the Europa League will continue on Friday morning. The second leg of the team’s match against Greek side Atromitos FC was abandoned on Thursday evening after a small fire broke out in the Alkmaar stadium.
When the game was stopped, AZ trailed 1-0 on the night but led 3-2 on aggregate.
Feyenoord lost 1-2 to Russian side Kuban Krasnodar and is out of the competition.
