The Dutch pay most in Europe for mobile phone calls

Mobile phone calls costs more in the Netherlands than anywhere else in Europe, figures from the European Commission show.

It costs 14.7 eurocent for a one minute call in the Netherlands, while the European average is 9.1 eurocent for one minute.

In Lithuania, the cost is 1.9 eurocent per minute.

The price differences cannot be explained by variations in quality, the cost of the service or the spending power of the consumers, says the Commission.

Digital Agenda commissioner Neelie Kroes wants the internal telecommunications market strengthened to counteract the price differences.

‘These figures show the current 28 national telecom markets in Europe do not give the consumer the advantages a single market would offer,’ Kroes told RTL news.
