Turnover in the hospitality industry has dropped for the first time in three years, with a fall of 1.7% in the first quarter of this year, according to new figures.

Although prices rose 2.1%, less food and drink was consumed, according to the latest figures from the central statistics agency CBS.

Cafes saw the biggest drop, with nearly 10% less food and drink sold compared with a year ago. Tax increases took prices up an average 3.8%.

Restaurants also increased their prices which compensated for the lower number of diners, says the CBS. Turnover increased nearly 1% over the quarter.
