Post-Project X Haren, riot damage fund to be made permanent
People convicted in court of rioting will have to pay money into a special fund to compensate the victims, junior justice minister Fred Teeven has decided.
The fund was first set up to compensate victims of the Project X Haren riots. They took place last year after a birthday party invitation on Facebook went viral and a large group of youths went on the rampage.
Juveniles were ordered to contribute €250 to the fund, adults €500. In total, 45 contributions were made post Haren, taking the fund to €17,000.
Football
People convicted of causing damage to property during football-related disturbances and the New Year celebrations will also have to contribute to the fund, Teeven said.
The new compensation system will be evaluated in 2015.
