Gay Krant is bankrupt after 34 years

The Gay Krant, a long-established Dutch newspaper for homosexuals, has gone bankrupt, its website stated on Tuesday.

Advertising revenue has fallen drastically, the number of subscribers has decreased and distribution to shops was stopped by the distributor because it was no longer viable, the paper says.

The Gay Krant began in a gay bar in Eindhoven in early 1980 when the owner handed out an information sheet of two double-folded A4s to his customers.

Since then it has been fighting for homo emancipation under the leadership of Joop Boonstra and Henk Krol.

Boonstra retired on health grounds a few years ago. Krol is now an MP and leader of the 50Plus party.
