Borough councils will be scrapped
The upper house, or senate, on Tuesday voted to scrap the borough councils in Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
The legislation to abolish borough councils was passed by parliament before the election last September. It is due to take effect in 2014.
Amsterdam and Rotterdam are the only cities to have borough councils, with seven and 14 respectively.
Scrapping them is not aimed at saving money, but at reducing the size of the government.
