Dutch laboratory opened on Antarctica
A Dutch research laboratory, where scientists will study the effects of climate change, has been formally opened on Antarctica.
The opening ceremony took place two days later than planned because strong winds stopped the delegation of government officials and journalists arriving from Chile.
The complex has been named the Dirck Gerritszoon Pomp laboratory after the man some claim was the first European to see Antarctica, when his ship was blown off course in 1599. It is part of the British reseach base Rothera.
