Dijsselbloem to outline his views on the eurozone on Monday
Finance minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem is to outline his own vision of the future of the euro on Monday, Nos television reports.
Dijsselbloem, who is widely tipped to take over as chairman of the influential euro group, made the comments at the start of parliamentary proceedings on Thursday.
On Wednesday, French finance minister Pierre Moscovici called on Dijsselbloem to provide clarity about his position on the euro ahead of Monday’s meeting of European finance ministers. A decision on a new chairman for the euro group to succeed Jean-Claude Juncker had been expected at Monday’s meeting.
Interview
Moscovici said in an interview with German paper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung it is not clear what Dijsselbloem’s vision is.
Moscovici told the paper he wants to know how Dijsselbloem envisages maintaining the eurozone in its present form, improve the prospects for economic growth and further develop banking union. ‘If I vote in my own country, I want to know the candidates’ programmes,’ he said.
According to Nos, Dijsselbloem said the request was extremely reasonable and one he will meet on Monday. Juncker also presented his vision prior to being named chairman, the Dutch minister said.
