Man suspected of 1999 schoolgirl murder remanded in custody
A Frisian village farmer who is suspected of the rape and murder of a 16-year-old girl in 1999 has been remanded in custody for 14 days by judges in Leeuwarden.
Jasper S was arrested earlier this week after dna tests linked him to the murdered girl. Police carried out dna checks on men living in the locality this summer in a last-ditch attempt to find her killer. S’s farm in Oudwoude is 2.5 km from the spot where Marianne Vaatstra’s body was found.
After the short hearing, S’s lawyer Jan Vlug declined to comment on the case and it appears the dairy farmer has not made a confession, news agency ANP said.
The public prosecution department also refused to comment because of the risk of influencing potential witnesses.
However, as is usual in serious crimes, S’s mental state will be evaluated, the spokeswoman said. He is currently being held in isolation – which means he is only allowed contact with his lawyer.
