Thieves make off with 90 metal manhole covers
Some 90 metal manhole covers were stolen in the Gelderland village of Velp on Monday night, the local council confirmed on Tuesday.
Council officials have put up warning signs and taped off areas where storm drains and other holes in the groung have been left open and so far there have been no accidents, a council spokesman told news agency ANP.
The council suspects the manhole covers may have been taken by metal thieves but say no valuable metals are involved in their production. A new cover costs some €35 and new ones have now been ordered.
So far no witnesses have come forward.
