15,000 sign up on first day of organ donor week
The first day of the organ donation week has seen 15,000 people sign up as potential donors, the health ministry said on Tuesday.
The online action features famous Dutch people encouraging people to go to the website transplantatiestichting.nl to register as donors.
The Netherlands has around 5.6 million registered donors and a waiting list of some 1,300 patients. For instance, someone needing a kidney transplant can wait four years until a suitable kidney becomes available.
The health ministry wants people to register as donors to avoid families having to decide on donation after a loved one dies.
