VVD’s Anouchka van Miltenburg is new parliamentary chairwoman

An MP from the right-wing Liberal party VVD has been elected the new chairwoman of the lower house of parliament.

Anouchka van Miltenburg, a parliamentarian for 10 years, won in the third round, seeing off challenges for the job from Khadija Arib (PvdA) and Gerard Schouw (D66).
MPs voted in a secret ballot for the new chairwoman, who replaces Gerdi Verbeet. Two of the 150 ballot papers were spoiled.
In a written portrait, the Volkskrant said Van Miltenburg is ‘more than a jolly Liberal with an asymmetric hairstyle’.
A journalist by profession, Van Miltenburg is deputy leader of the parliamentary VVD and, in her spare time, is lead singer in a rock group called Blow Smoke, the paper said.
