MPs angry as seven-lane motorway threatens park

Transport minister Melanie Schultz van Haegen has been asked to explain her plans to expand part of the A27 motorway near Utrecht into a seven-lane each way highway.

MPs say the decision by the caretaker minister may conflict with undertakings not to embark on any controversial plans while the cabinet is in a caretaker function.
The A27, a notorious traffic blackspot, is currently five lanes in either direction between Lunetten and Rijnsweerd. The minister says the expansion will improve traffic flow over the motorway as a whole and improve road safety.
Utrecht city council also says it is ‘angry and surprised’ at the decision, which will mean the loss of a large strip of the Amelisweerd country park. Nor has any good research into alternatives been done, the city council said.
