Minister allocates €27m to restore listed churches

Six listed churches are to get a total of €27m in government cash for emergency restoration projects, caretaker culture minister Halbe Zijlstra announced on Thursday.

‘These short-term investments are profitable in the long term because every euro we spend on restoring listed buildings returns to the treasury as €1.50 through taxes and income from tourism,’ Zijlstra said in a statement.
The Sint Bavo cathedral in Haarlem and the Nieuwe Kerk in Delft are among those now eligible for funding.
A further €20m will be given to the national restoration fund to provide low cost loans to listed building owners so they can carry out vital repair work.
