Child refugee deportations halted during formation talks

MPs have decided to halt the deportation of families with children who have lived in the Netherlands for more than five years, pending the formation of a new cabinet.

However, immigration minister Gerd Leers has refused to comment on the new situation, saying he does not want to sow confusion.
Leers said he always looks carefully at every individual case but will not discuss the general situation until parliament has defined its ideas better.
There is now majority support in parliament for legislation giving an amnesty to children who have lived in the Netherlands for more than eight years.
MPs have decided not to vote on the legislation until a new government has been formed. The VVD opposes an amnesty but Labour is in favour.
