The Netherlands cannot afford the SP to win the election: Labour party chairman

If the socialist party SP wins the election on September 12, it will cause the Netherlands great financial problems which the country cannot afford, chairman of the labour PvdA party Hans Spekman told the Algemene Dagblad on Friday.

‘In a time of deep crisis, with so many bankruptcies and uncertainty in the jobs market, the SP has no solutions,’ he told the paper. ‘This is not a time for experiments, and I think party leader Emile Roemer is a risk.’
Spekman says Roemer will not be able to deliver on most of his promises and wants the SP leader to be honest with the voters. For instance, on the question of the retirement age.
‘Roemer wants to keep the retirement age at 65, but this would eventually lead to a situation where people would have to work until they are 85.’
The SP is currently riding high in the polls with a predicted 30 seats or more. The PvdA is on between 16 and 23 seats.
