A recently discovered shrub in Costa Rica has been named after the Dutch biologist Maarten Kappelle, the World Fund for Nature said at the weekend.

Kappelle has been carrying out scientific research into the flora, eco-system and protection of the mountain forests of the central American country since 1985.
The miconia kappellei was recently discovered, along with four other varieties of shrub. It grows to 1.5 to 3 metres tall and has hairy stems. Between March and May it blooms with white flowers.
