Olympics: Upset for judo fighter Henk Grol – Update
Judo fighter Henk Grol, widely tipped for gold in the under 100 kilogram category, could only manage a bronze medal at the Olympic Park in London on Thursday.
He beat the South Korean Hee-Tae Hwang in the fight-off.
The 27-year-old, twice silver medalist in the world championships and with a bronze medal from the Peking Olympics, saw his chance of gold slip away in the quarter finals when he was floored by a surprise move by his opponent, the German Dimitri Peters.
Grol had never before lost to Peters.
Russian president Vladimir Putin, a judo fan, was in the hall to see his compatriot Tagir Khaibulaev win gold.
The Netherlands is in 17th place in the medal list, with one gold, one silver and three bronze.
