Drivers who marginally break speed limits have higher accident risk
Drivers who persistently break the speed limit by a small margin also run a higher risk of being involved in an accident than those who keep to the rules, according to research by traffic safety institute SWOV.
Figures show people who drive at very high speeds are 100 times more likely to be in an accident. But motorists who are often fined for going a few kilometres per hour too fast are 10 times more likely to crash than drivers who don’t, the SWOV said.
The organisation said the difference in accident rates with drivers who sometimes speed is because they pay less attention to traffic signs and road conditions than those who don’t.
