Community service and not guilty verdicts for football hooligans

Arnhem appeal court on Tuesday sentenced 11 Utrecht football supporters to community service and found four not guilty of rioting during last December’s match between Utrecht and Twente.

Police fired warning shots to break up gangs of angry Utrecht football fans following the club’s 2-6 thrashing by FC Twente. Trouble had first broken out during the game, leading the referee to halt play for a time.
Eight police officers, including one mounted police officer, were injured in the incident.
The sentences awarded in Arnhem were lower than those imposed by Utrecht district court. In addition, the Utrecht court had found all 15 defendents guilty, news agency ANP said.
