Visa problems hold up visit by Iraqi minister to discuss refugees
Iraq’s migration minister Shafiq Duski, due in the Netherlands yesterday to discuss the return of hundreds of failed asylum seekers, was not allowed to board the flight because he did not have a proper visa, Nos television reports.
Duski had been due to hold talks with Dutch immigration minister Gerd Leers.
A spokesman for Leers told Nos the refusal to allow the minister on a flight was a misunderstanding and a proper visa has now been organised. The minister is now due to arrive in the Netherlands on Monday evening.
The visit follows protests by a group of Iraqi refugees who are due to be deported. Iraq will only accept voluntary returnees but several hundred Iraqis are refusing to go, saying they will not be safe.
