Tension mounts as Dutch prepare for vital football match

It is ‘do or die’ for the Dutch football team when they face Germany on Wednesday evening in the group phase of the European Cup, according to various press reports.

The Dutch are languishing at the bottom of Group B after their 0-1 defeat against Denmark last Saturday.
Coach Bert van Merwijk said at a press conference on Tuesday evening that he has to laugh at ‘all the negative stories’ but said his players are ‘irritated’ by the comments.
Certainly his player choices have come under scrutiny. Political pollster Maurice de Hond even polled 1,200 of his respondents, 58% of whom said they wanted to see striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar on the field at the start of this match.
Certainty about the outcome of the Dutch attempt to win Euro 2012 has also dropped. Before the Denmark match, 24% thought Holland would not proceed beyond the group stage. That figure is now 59%.
In Kunduz in Afghanistan, where Dutch soldiers are training police officers, there is a ‘cold war’ between the Dutch and German forces who are sharing a base, says the Telegraaf. For this evening’s vital match, the Dutch have organised an ‘Oranje square’ where they will watch the proceedings away from their rivals.
The Telegraaf reports that a firm of bailiffs will be using tonight’s match to collect money from debtors. If they do not pay up, their television will be confiscated.
Kick-off is at 8.45 pm.
