Oranje crash out of Euro 2012 after failing to win a single point

The Netherlands is out of the Euro 2012 football championship after losing their third group match 2-1 to Portugal.

Oranje needed to beat Portugal by at least two goals to have any chance of progressing into the knock-out stage of the tournament. The Netherlands lost their previous group B matches against Denmark and Germany.
According to news agency ANP, this is the first time in the history of the European championship that the Netherlands has failed to win a single point. Germany and Portugal progress into the next stage of the competition.
After the match, Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk said both he and the team were responsible for the defeat. ‘We made very simple mistakes,’ he said. ‘It really irritates me. I failed, not just the players.’
‘It was all about the little things,’ the Telegraaf quoted Van Marwijk as saying.

Nine people were arrested on the Jonckbloetplein in The Hague after the match ended but there were no significant incidents elsewhere, news agency ANP said.
The Dutch team had been one of the favourites to win the competition. Oranje was runner up in the final of the 2010 World Cup.
ING economists reported earlier this week that the elimination of the Netherlands in the group stage will cost the Dutch economy millions of euros in lost turnover.
