Customs police at Amsterdam Schiphol airport intercepted 40% more false passports during the course of 2011 than in the previous year, according to a report from the airport’s expertise centre for identity fraud.

Last year, 47,522 travel documents were subjected to extra checks, of which 1,137 turned out to be false. This was an increase of 239 over 2010, says the report, quoted in the Telegraaf.
Most of the false passports came from Spain, the UK, Italy, France, Turkey, Nigeria and Bulgaria. In total, false passports were found from 103 different countries.
In addition, there were 118 cases of fraud with original Dutch passports and 218 cases of fraud with copies of Dutch documents, the paper said.
