Unemployment rises to 6.2%

The official Dutch unemployment rate rose to a six-year high of 6.2% in April, the national statistics office CBS said on Thursday.

The rise, which affected men and women equally, was ‘relatively strong’ the CBS said. The 24,000 increase took the jobless total to 489,000.
Nevertheless, the number of unemployment benefit (ww) claims fell by 3,000 to 292,000. This was mainly due to seasonal factors, the CBS said.
Around 25% of ww claimants are over the age of 55.
