The Netherlands does not have enough good politicians and those in power show a lack of vision, Bernard Wientjes, head of the biggest Dutch employers’ organisation VNO-NCW said in Saturday’s NRC.

This lack of vision leads to missed political and economic opportunities, Wientjes said. ‘And the economy and national interest are so close,’ he said.
‘You no longer see the real elite at the top of our political system,’ he said. ‘Ministers, the cabinet, senate and parliament… and that is bad for the country.’ In addition, ministers are surrounded by yes men ‘with one aim, to make the minister happy,’ he said.
Nevertheless, Wientjes said he would be prepared to serve as a minister if asked after the next election. ‘I would like to fight for Dutch business interests,’ he said. ‘I’d do it if necessary.’
