Drunken children ‘should pay for their own treatment’
Teenagers who have consumed so much alcohol they have to be hospitalised should be forced to pay for their treatment themselves, say hospital chiefs in Enschede.
Herre Kingma, head of the Twente Medisch Spectrum hospital, says it is ‘absurd’ society pays to take care of children who are unconscious through drink.
‘Last weekend we had 15 emergency patients at night and 14 of them were seriously under the influence of alcohol. That makes me very angry,’ Kingma told Nos television.
Hospitals dealt with 684 drunken teenagers last year, compared with 337 in 2008.
